Rob Pelinka says the Lakers have met all three of their offseason priorities.

The starting point: the turning of LeBron James era

On Thursday, Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka stated that the organization has achieved its three major midseason goals amid the transition from the LeBron James era to building around Luka Doncic.

For the fans, the initial message is clear: The team stops revolving around LeBron and starts organizing the cast around 27-year-old Doncic with a younger core and more depth.

Pelinka summarized the team's priorities on three fronts: retaining Austin Reaves, acquiring a franchise center , and developing a younger roster, endorsed by J.J. Redick, with players capable of dribbling, passing, and pitching.

The first goal was accomplished with Reaves' four-year, $1.7 millionUS$ 184 renewal.[citation needed] The second came with 7-foot-2, center Walker Kessler, obtained via a trade under new contract to the Utah Jazz .

The third goal appears in the additions of Quentin Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashvili and Collin Sexton , who help assemble a younger cast with more depth.

The turnaround price: contract, choices and lack of control up to 2032

Securing Kessler cost the Lakers a four-year, $3 million contract as well as two unprotected matchday first-round picks and two first-rounder trades.

Pelinka defended the investment in center , who played just five games last season while recovering from surgery on his left shoulder.

According to Pelinka, there's a shortage of that profile. He said when you look at the recruiting or free agent market, those pivots simply don't exist. In his assessment, when an opportunity arises and the organization has a superstar like Luka within the organization, it needs to be seized.

Other arrivals, departures and the logic of long contracts

In addition to Kessler, the team signed Quentin Grimes for four years and US$ 60 million, Sandro Mamukelashvili for four year and US$ 52 million and Collin Sexton for two years and US$ 19 million.

Redick commented on the unusually long contracts given to reserve players in a summer when many teams preferred shorter deals. "The market is the market", said the coach.

The Lakers parted ways with LeBron James and veterans Rui Hachimura , Marcus Smart, DeAndre Ayton , Luke Kennard and Jaxson Hayes during the offseason.

Redick highlighted that two spots in the starting quintet remain undefined before the season. This means for the fan, rebuilding already has a defined direction but is still dependent on scaling adjustments.
