Bob Pettit, basketball legend and member of the NBA Hall of Fame, dies at 93; he was the league's first Most Valuable Player

Bob Pettit, the NBA's all-time leading scorer and one of the league's most decorated players, died on Wednesday, September 23, at his home in Metairie, Louisiana.

A farewell

In an official statement, the family confirmed his death: "Dad passed away peacefully at home in Metairie on Wednesday, September 23rd. He was an incredible father. A soul but kind, humble and sweet. We are very blessed to have him in our lives and we will miss him".

The Hall of Fame also paid tribute, describing Pettit as an elegant technical center who revolutionized the position of power forward throughout his career, with 11 NBA All-Star Game appearances and two MVP awards.

Who was Bob Pettit ?

At 6 ft 9 in (2.06 m), Pettit played 11 seasons in the NBA for the Milwaukee/St. Louis Hawks before signing with St. Louis, and then later moving to Atlanta where he plays today.[1] He was an All-Star in all of his 11 years as a player, won the All-star game four times - more than any other coach except Kobe Bryant - and was selected to the NBA's All-Defensive Team ten times.[2]

His numbers are impressive to this day, averaging 26.4 points and 16.2 rebounds per game in his career.

1954 In his final college season (1953-54), he averaged 31.4 points and 17.3 rebounds per game, leading LSU to the 1988-14 conference title.
