Gregg Popovich, legend of the San Antonio Spurs, has a lot to talk about off the court. According to TMZ, he married last week Mary Barth Budenholzer, ex-wife of Mike Budenhalzer who worked for years as an assistant under Popovich himself.

The ceremony took place on September 16, in Texas, according to TMZ, which obtained a marriage license from Bexar County.[1] Popovich is 77 years old.[2] Mary and Mike Budenholzer reportedly divorced in 2016.[3]

The two have a long history together. Budenholzer was an assistant coach for Popovich's Spurs in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014, winning five titles with the team.

Popovich ended his coaching career in 2025, after 29 seasons, as the NBA's all-time winningest head coach.[1] Months after retirement, the league adjusted its retrospective: he withdrew the 77 games he lost during the 2024-25 season, ending a career record of 1,390 wins and 824 losses.

The 45 games of the Spurs' 32-45 campaign that season, during Popovich's absence, were credited to Mitch Johnson, who took over as interim coach and later had his interim label removed.

The current situation

Now retired, Popovich remains with the Spurs as president of basketball operations, a position he has held since leaving coaching last year.
