Bob Pettit, the NBA's all-time leading scorer and longest serving member of the Atlanta Hawks, died at age 93, according to a Hall of Fame announcement.

Basketball has lost one of its founding fathers. Bob Pettit, the first MVP in NBA history and an enduring icon for the Atlanta Hawks, died Thursday at age 93.
Who was Bob Pettit ?
Pettit made history at a time when the NBA was still building its identity. He was the first player in the league to reach 20,000 points, an all-time mark for American basketball in the 1950s and '60s.
Pettit was selected to the All-Star Game in each of his 11 NBA seasons, and won the MVP trophy four times, a feat matched only by Kobe Bryant.
The 1958 title and the first MVP
The pinnacle came in 1958, when Pettit led the Hawks to their only championship title in franchise history, a final against the Boston Celtics.
The respect between the giants of that era was recorded in the words of Bill Russell, legend of the Boston Celtics:
"Probably one of the fiercest competitors we've ever played".

At the time of his retirement, he was the NBA's all-time leader in points scored (20,880), and second in rebounds (12,849).
What does a loss mean ?
Pettit leaves a rare legacy: the only champion and definitive face of a franchise, pioneer in points scoring that today seem trivial and first name on the league's MVPs list.
