The origin of the declaration
Toni Kukoc , a Croatian legend and member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, returned to the debate on European influence in the NBA during his participation in the Croatian program Sport Nedjeljom.
Kukoc acknowledged the merit of today's stars, but made sure to balance praise with a fierce defense from the generation he himself helped build.
What was said about Jokic and Doncic
The Croat did not spare praise for the Serbian and Slovenian, which he attributes to their European and Balkan background.
"Jokic and Doncic have a very high basketball IQ, which comes from the European and Balkan school of fundamentals.
On Jokic specifically, the praise came with a historical caveat. "Praise Nikola Jokic, and rightly so he's a phenomenal player whose vision of play leaves me mesmerized. But Jokic plays in an era where you don't have to face three physical defensive pivots every game".
The Defence of the Age Itself
For Kukoc, the giant and traditional pivots of yesteryear set the rhythm of the game. "At that time, the bottle was taken over by huge and traditional ones, which dominated every rebound", he recalled.
He also pointed out the structural advantages of today's players: modern sports science, nutritionists and advanced physical recovery systems.
"You have Jokic, Doncic and Giannis. Okay, these are three players who were MVPs, great players", he said. "But I will never admit that today's players are better than Drazen, Dino, Divac, Sabonis or Marculjonis".
Legacy and life in Chicago Bulls
The former Split natural player also spoke about the documentary miniseries The Last Dance and the concept of completeness on court, a pattern he learned under Phil Jackson 's command.
Kukoc remains attached to Chicago Bulls as a special advisor the club for which he played part of his 945 career games in the NBA and won three titles, between 1996 and 1998.
Where the discussion is now
Kukoc's positioning shows that the debate between eras follows vivo among the legends who paved the way for Europeans in the NBA.[citation needed] Today's generation dominates the awards of MVP , but pioneers from the 1970s1990 continue to claim due historical recognition and Kukoc, with the authority of those who lived through both phases, does not intend to back down on this stance.
