The situation
Stephen Curry is about to start his 18th season with the Golden State Warriors, but arrives at training camp without a newly signed contract. The 30 jersey became eligible for renewal in late August, more than a month has passed, and the 38-year-old two-time MVP and biggest name in franchise history still hasn't put pen to paper.
"There's no drama", Curry told ESPN, explaining that the decision awaits "the right moment when I have all the information I need to make the right choice".
What's at stake
Curry could sign a two-year, $1.7 million extension that would add to his current contract expiring at $2.6 million. But the Warriors have reportedly presented him with an assortment of proposals: from the maximum contract to smaller amounts that would free up salary space to bolster the roster around him.
"We're in a very interesting situation. All the conditions of the salary cap, whether I sign for more or less or whatever... I want to be on a competitive team. I want flexibility because we haven't had that in recent years", he said.
According to Curry, "information and patience are the key". He stressed that if he doesn't sign it will not affect his on-court performance.
The context of the team
The numbers explain the caution.Since their last title, won in , the Warriors have gone to the playoffs only twice in the past four years and never returned to the Western Conference Finals again.Last season ended with 37 wins and 45 losses in the regular season and elimination from play-in and this year's roster will look very much like that group.
Curry continues to play at the All-NBA level when he is fit, but the team has not been able to put together a lineup worthy of a title bid.
The Jimmy Butler Factor
There is still one major unknown: the Warriors will only be complete later in the season when Jimmy Butler returns from an ACL injury.
So, a natural reading of the impasse is that Curry can wait for the season to run its course in order to assess whether or not the Warriors are even close to the West's candidate pool before settling on what kind of contract to sign.
Where things are now
The 38-year-old insists that the desire to end his career in Golden State has not changed, but he wants to make one last task force for the title and needs to gauge how the contract choice affects the team's ability to reinforce itself.
