From Portugal to Madrid: the return of a 63-year-old coach

At the age of 63, José Mourinho was being read as a coach in a different phase from that which led him to major titles in Europe. He had returned to Portugal to work at Benfica, where he felt at ease, and seemed outside the center of conversation. The call of Florentino Pérez, president of Real Madrid, club he commanded between 2010 and 2013, re-placed the Portuguese under the spotlight.

In football, the phrase means total commitment. He notes that the player trains two or three hours a day but lives as a professional 24 hours. What he eats, what he drinks, how he sleeps and private life influence income.

In this logic, he says that the contract matters less than posture. A 22- or 23-year-old athlete may have friends who go out for ballads on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights but cannot go except the night after a game if there is no other match three days later. The coach also sees risk in activities such as skiing or cycling hidden: a fall can leave the player out of three matches or cause an injury which prevents him from performing at the highest level.

Superstars, ego and wardrobe

For Mourinho, superstar is not only talent. He defines the superstar as a whole: personality, proportion and respect to stop time. When ego exceeds the limit and the player starts acting against the group, he ceases to be a superstar in the eyes of the Portuguese. The management of the dressing room, in this reading, is balance between leadership, collection and trust.

The new stage begins with a loaded calendar. Real Madrid faces Villarreal at home on 10/10, at 16h (Brasília), for LaLiga ; then visits Rome on 14/10, also at 16 h (Brasilia), for the Champions League; and receives Sevilla on 18/10 at 4 p.m (Brassília), again for LaLiga .
