The origin of a worldwide exception

There is only one country on the planet that has never played an official international football match: Nauru, a tiny Pacific island nation with just over 10,000 inhabitants.

The reason is a combination of factors: it has only about 21 km2 territory, does not have adequate sports infrastructure for the sport and historically concentrated its attention on other modalities and priorities.

There are movements to structure sport on the island, with the aim of making Nauru a single nation without official international football or which includes creating minimum conditions for the game to be played and eventually organised at national level.

For Nauru to participate in official competitions, the way was through the structure of a local federation and by recognition alongside international football bodies - a process that, in other countries of Oceania, took years between the first organized step and its debut in official matches.

If we move forward, the sporting world will gain a rare story: to follow from scratch the construction of a country's first national team. For Oceania it would mean more than selection on regional circuits.

The current moment is the point of departure: there's still an exception Nauru has never played an official international match and sport practically doesn't exist on the island , but for the first time there is a concrete debate about changing this.
