What Was at Stake

São Paulo reached the final of the Copa do Brasil with a simple score to close: the club had everything in the trophy room, except that cup. The Brazilian Cup was the only major national competition that Tricolor had never won, and the final against Flamengo was the chance to close this historic gap once and for all.

The Road to Decision

The campaign was marked by classics. On the way to the final, the team eliminated Corinthians and Palmeiras the two biggest state rivals which gave the achievement an even greater weight for the fans. In the decision, the opponent was Flamengo, in a confrontation between two giants of Brazilian football.

The final in two stages

The first game (Maracanã) shall be played by the following teams: ... . São Paulo won 1-0, with a goal from Calleri, and went out of Rio de Janeiro with an advantage in the aggregate.

Back game (MorumBIS): This is the first time I've ever been to a Super Bowl. With over 63,000 fans in the stadium, Tricolor drew 1-1. The São Paulo goal was scored by Rodrigo Nestor. As Tricolour had won the first leg, the aggregate of 2-1 sealed the title.

With the cup, São Paulo became "champion of everything": it began to have in its curriculum the main national and international titles that a Brazilian club can conquer. Three years later, that campaign eliminating Corinthians and Palmeiras on the course and beating Flamengo in the decision continues as one of the most celebrated chapters in the recent history of the club, and the Copa do Brasil is no longer the exception in the tricolor gallery.
