The Premier League has shown interest in overcoming the EFL's funding impasse.

The Premier League stated that it expected to reach an agreement with the English Football League (EFL) on a new funding model for English football "as soon as possible".

The relationship between the Premier League and the EFL - which administers the Championship, League One and League Two - has been fraught with structural tension for years.

This imbalance led to the intervention of the British Government, which created an independent regulator for English football with a view to guaranteeing the financial sustainability of all clubs in the five national divisions.
