What happened on the Sixers media day
Camden, New Jersey On Monday, September 28,[16] the Philadelphia 76ers held their annual media day with a news that changed the franchise's expectation barrier: LeBron James, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey officially appeared together as teammates.
The inevitable question came. Asked how the group would define who would be the "alpha" among so many stars, Jaylen Brown NBA 2006 NBA Finals MVP,NBA2024 acquired in an offseason trade with the Boston Celtics simply replied: "Next question".
Before the meeting, one yard and a decision
According to Philadelphia sources heard by ESPN, the four stars met at the Sixers' training center on Monday before media day obligations for a joint practice.
LeBron, 41, and season 24.
LeBron James enters his 24th season in the league, an unprecedented 41 years old.
"You have to try and keep the balance", James said. "Understand that noise is going to be noise. What happens outside this building will continue to happen and it's going to double, triple and quadruple now that I'm here. That's part of the territory. I understand".
To him, the only way to get past scrutiny is to work harder than he does.
"The work we put into this building, the work that we put in when you're on the road watching a movie, will take care of itself", he said.
Embiid and the daily construction
Joel Embiid, the league MVP in 2023 and LeBron's teammate for United States Olympic gold in Paris 2024, summed up the group's approach.
"Going into this year, we want to spend as much time together on and off the court as possible, trying to build those relationships that we already have", Embiid said.
Maxey and the Willingness to Change
Tyrese Maxey has been an All-Star in two of the last three seasons and is coming off a year where he averaged 28.3 points - fifth best in the league.
"I'm quite comfortable playing in any kind of situation at this point in my career", Maxey said. "I have played under so many different circumstances. I will continue to play with the ball, in pick-and-roll actions, but for me to be able to play without the ball and catch a few catches and shots, get out of blocks, get off handoffs, run transitions.
The move will be valuable to incorporate Brown, who was fourth in the league with 28.7 points per game as well as the NBA's all-time leading scorer.
Sacrifice as a Condition for the Title
James was direct about what will be needed for the franchise to win its first championship since 2010.
"If we say that we want to do something special, there will be a collective sacrifice in a positive way", he said. "Sometimes in sports people hear 'sacrifice' and they automatically start thinking negatively. It's not a negative thing. So many guys who have been in our league throughout my career never made a career sacrifice, average 20, 22 points per game, and had one or two playoff appearances and zero wins in the playoffs. If this is how you want your career to be, fine. Everybody has different goals. But I don't think anyone downstairs or in the locker room feels like that and wants it to be their career, otherwise we wouldn't be here".
James illustrated the point with his own self-sacrifice, leaving wife and family on the West Coast to come to Philadelphia.
"We've got to be comfortable being uncomfortable", he said. "That's the best way to accelerate greatness. You have to fall in love with doing things that are not comfortable. And if we can do it, we might make a great team. If we don't, we're going to be like, 'Oh man, that was a big team on paper, we had so much talent and we lost in the second round.' I don' t want to do this.
What that means for the fans
The Sixers' media day in 2026 marks the official start of a rare experiment: four players with storied play history and expressive numbers gathered together in the same locker room, with an extra practice even before training camp.
