Beşiktaş regressa à EuroLeague – O que as probabilidades revelam sobre a primeira época dos clubes promovidos

The return after 13 years and a completely different scenario

Besiktas is back in the EuroLeague after 13 years of absence. When the Black Eagles left the competition in 2013, the tournament was another: fewer teams, less rounds, less demand. Now, the Turkish club finds a format with 20 teams, 38 rounds in the regular season, Play-In Showdown and a depth of quality that simply did not exist at that time.

The market will price Besiktas near the bottom of the table, as it does with any rookie or returning player. but recent history of clubs promoted to EuroLeague suggests that the market's instinct about these teams is far less reliable than it seems. and the two most recent cases point in the same surprising direction.

The project that Besiktas built (and not improvised)

The numbers behind this decision are remarkable: since taking over in the summer of 2018, the Serbian coach has taken Besiktas to six finals in three seasons two Turkish League Finals, one EuroCup Final, two Turkey Cup Finals and a Presidential Cup final before handing the qualification to EuroLeague which brought the club back into European elite.

The summer recruitment reflects the same intent.NBA Furkan Korkmaz brings Turkish national team pedigree and experience.2024 Scottie Wilbekin is one of the most proven goalkeepers in EuroLeague history.2025 Metecan Birsen came through Istanbul to join the project.2021 Eugene Omoruyi comes directly from a EuroLeagues season with Baskonia, where he averaged 10.7 points and 3.7 rebounds in 23 games.2022 DaQuan Jeffries and Jaylen Nowell add tested athleticism,[9] and Mady Sissoko gives the pitcher new strength on the post.[9] Four key players from the qualifying campaign were kept alongside the arrivals.[10]

It is a deliberate mixture of proven EuroLeague role players, experience in the NBA and Turkish national team talent rather than the scattered approach that struggling newcomers often take.

The Paris precedent: when the market went badly wrong with a rookie

If you want to understand why the rookie discount deserves skepticism, look at what happened two seasons ago. Paris Basketball entered EuroLeague 2024-25 by the same route that Besiktas traveled qualification via EuroCup and was widely projected as a lower tier team in their debut campaign.

What actually happened became recent EuroLeague folklore: Paris won 10 straight games and jumped to the top of the standings in Round 12, started 7-3, tied for second place, and T.J. Shorts ended up being voted Play-In MVP.[citation needed] One of the most successful debuts in the competition's modern history came from a team that the market predicted would suffer.

The odds error was treating inexperience in the EuroLeague as the dominant variable.[citation needed] Paris had won the EuroCup2023-24 with a record of 22-1, sweeping the finals, with Shorts taking both season MVP and finals MVP.

The market priced Paris for their lack of track record in the EuroLeague. It should have priced them for the quality of what they had built. To be fair, most promoted clubs finish in the bottom third. Paris was exceptional because its dominance in the European Cup was extraordinary. But this case has proven that the rookie label by itself says almost nothing.

The second case: Valencia and the confirmation of a standard

Valencia returned to the EuroLeague for 2025-26 and reached their first Final Four in history, defeating Panathinaikos in a five-game playoff series along the way with Pedro Martínez receiving the Coach of the Year award.

Two consecutive seasons have now produced a promoted or returning club that has dramatically surpassed its market price. Once is an outlier. Twice starts to look like a structural pattern and the structural explanation is straightforward: clubs arriving by EuroCup route, or coming back with strong domestic infrastructure bring much more continuity, quality of leadership and system maturity than a "starter" price reflects.

Where Besiktas fits between the two models

The case for the Paris model is genuine: continuity of elite coaching, serious investment, EuroLeague-caliber additions and an opening home game against Valencia that's totally winnable.

The argument for caution is equally genuine. Besiktas did not dominate their route as Paris dominated six finals reached in three years, but most lost. Istanbul is also the most demanding basketball city of Europe.

Turkey's first derby, against Efes in Round 7 on October 22, will test them before the fall is over. A 38-round marathon also tests depth, injury resistance and travel endurance in ways that domestic cup campaigns never test.

The honest reading is that Besiktas is better than the bottom table price at which it will open, but falls short of the playoff frame that optimists are going to paint.

What to Watch for in the First Rounds

The practical issue is not whether Besiktas can win the EuroLeague they cannot, and their title price is irrelevant. Value is in other markets. Timing matters more than anything else. Paris's 10-win streak came early before opponents had movies of their system. If a rookie's approach will surprise the league, it usually happens in October and November. In December, the sample grew, the scout reached out and the odds corrected themselves.

Home form is the other early sign. debutants with strong home fans typically exceed expectations at home and are down out in the first season, and Istanbul will deliver an atmosphere worthy of the occasion.

When Round 7 comes around, treat the derby against Efes as the real thing and what Besiktas show up with against one of the league's established powers will say more than any preseason projection.

Thirteen years is a long time away, but Besiktas isn't coming to make up the numbers... coach, cast and a two-season pattern of rookies shaming their opening odds all point in the same direction.

The smartest approach, as Paris and Valencia have shown in consecutive seasons, is to price them by what they've built.
