Duke coach Jon Scheyer used his first press conference since the end of last season to cast doubt on the Dallas Mavericks' interest in signing him.

With a vacancy open on the team's coaching staff, the Mavericks sought out options outside of the NBA and interviewed Scheyer, 39, who has led the Blue Devils since 2022. Part of the interest came from the coach's relationship with franchise star and current Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg: Scheyer coached Flagg in his only season for college basketball in 2024-25, and the two remained close after leading Duke to the 2025 Final Four.
Dallas ended up opting for Dusty May, ex-Michigan, but the poll exposed Scheyer's appeal in the world's premier league.
The "I'm exactly where I need to be" moment.
At the news conference, Scheyer left no room for speculation.
"I'm exactly where I need to be", said the coach, who also reinforced his long-term vision with the programme: "Not many people get their dream job at 33.
His record in office helps explain the confidence: 124 wins and only 25 losses in his first four seasons, as well as maintaining frequent exchanges of ideas with NBA coaches such as Will Hardy (Utah Jazz) and Joe Mazzulla (Boston Celtics).
The next chapter: contract until 2030-31
When asked on Jon Rothstein's podcast about a future coaching career in the NBA, Scheyer was evasive: "maybe, maybe not".
The current scenario, therefore, is one of stability: the NBA door remains half-open in discourse, but ties with the Blue Devils are armoured by contract and the fans can breathe on the coach's future.
