What happened?
Cedevita Olimpija announced on Wednesday the signing of point guard Latvian Rihards Lomazs, 30 years old and 1.93 m tall with a one-year contract.
Why did the team go after him?
The move has a clear motive: injuries.The Ljubljana club have been facing a sequence of foreclosures in the pre-season, which forced the board to react on the market.
Sporting director Chechu Mulero highlighted the history of the reinforcement: "Rihards Lomazs is an experienced and proven player, who has competed at the highest level of European basketball and is an important part of the Latvian national team".
"There will not be much time for him to get to know the team and our system before the start of the season, but his experience should allow a quick adaptation", said coach Zvezdan Mitrović, who also sees the late arrival as something positive: considering the difficulties in setting up training sessions with full roster, the reinforcement arrived "just at the right time".
The numbers justifying the recruitment
Lomazs' last season for Neptūnas in the EuroCup was a solid one: In 16 games, he averaged 18.6 points, 4.1 assists and 3.1 rebounds while shooting 38.2% from three-point range.
The Slovenian fans are already familiar with the Latvian, who scored 25 points for Ljubljana's Neptūnas in last EuroCup and 22 goals and nine assists during an August friendly between Slovenia and Latvia at Tivoli Hall.
Trajectory before Ljubljana
Lomazs started his career in Latvia, where he played for Ventspils and then went on to play in France, Germany, Turkey, Spain, Italy and Lithuania.
For the Latvian national team, of which he is captain, he played in FIBA EuroBasket 2025 with averages of 11.5 points and 5.8 assists including 21 points and seven assists in the eighth-round match against Lithuania.
What comes next
The player arrives near the end of pre-season and will have little training time, but comes as an immediate rotation piece. "Our ambitions are high in all competitions the EuroCup, ABA League and national competitions", stated Lomazs after signing.
